REMARKABLE INCIDENTS REPORTED BY SOME OF OUR ACA MEMBERS

NORTH WEST ESSEX AND EAST HERTFORDSHIRE BRANCH

My own recollections, in the preceding chapters, of not-too-serious experiences, pale into insignificance when compared to some of the following examples of accidents, near accidents, and bizarre incidents, sometimes amusing, sometimes hazardous, taken from Wings on the Whirlwind. I have made only a small selection of happenings, which match the general character and scope of this book. Sadly, the vast majority of these former fellow members of our ACA branch are no longer with us.

Peter Kenworthy (102 and 216 Squadrons), a navigator, and fellow ACA member, has recalled a bombing raid when two crew members looked above their aircraft and became very agitated. Intrigued, Peter looked up too:

I looked up straight into the bomb bay of the aircraft [above] and watched nine 1,000lb bombs come tumbling out of it. They passed between our starboard wing and our starboard tail plane, and inches [or so it seemed] from the fuselage.
